My studio is closed and I have retired from teaching.
Thank you for the wonderful years as your instructor.
I have been teaching private violin lessons continuously since 1994, and served for two years as a substitute music instructor for orchestra, band, and choir. As a teacher, my main goal is to impart love and appreciation for music. Each student is unique and individual, and it is my pleasure and challenge as an instructor to find what motivates each student and to nurture their development.
I teach students of all ages and levels. I have had students as young as 4 years of age up to students in their 60s. I teach beginning through advanced repertoire. I use the Suzuki materials along with traditional methods and some fiddle tunes (such as Fairfield Fiddle Farm and Mark O’Connor’s fiddle method) for beginning students. For intermediate and advanced students I use standard etudes, scales, shifting, and double-stop methods. Advanced repertoire includes concerto and sonata literature by Bach, Barber, Beethoven, Bruch, Conus, Lalo, Mozart, Prokofiev, Saint Saëns, Sarasate, Spohr, Viotti, Vitali, Wieniawski, and others.
Emphasis is on developing a sound technical foundation involving proper set up, balance, hand positions, and development of excellent bowing and left hand techniques. The ability to be expressive as a musician rests on a solid technical foundation.
When I lived in Iowa, many of my students were selected at live regional auditions to participate in the Iowa All-State Orchestra, which is comprised of the top 5% of high-school string players in the state. Several of my grade-school and middle-school students were selected every year for the Kennedy Honors Orchestra in Cedar Rapids, and the Northeast Iowa Conference Orchestra in Ames, Iowa. Today here in Grand Rapids, my students play in the St. Cecilia and Grand Rapids Youth Symphony orchestras at all levels. Over the years many of my students have taken top honors in regional solo and ensemble competitions, and have served as concertmaster/mistress at orchestra festivals and in their school orchestras.
My success as a teacher is best measured by the enjoyment my students display in learning and performing, and by the many who go on and continue to play violin throughout their lives.
